Bundanoon Highland Gathering - part 1Posted by Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 1 June 2011 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio. "The Irish invented the bagpipes as a joke and gave them to the Scottish, they still haven't found out." Well, to follow on from my series on traditional Irish music we reel straight into Scottish traditions! For my new series, I am at the Bundanoon Highland Gathering. We start - of course - with bagpipes! "BAGPIPES. The Missing Link between Noise & Music." (Tee shirt slogan at the Gathering.) All jokes aside, bagpipes massed in such numbers provide a stirring sound. And 23 Pipe Bands - kilted up like you see here - marched at the Highland Gathering. Bundanoon is a town in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales - halfway between Canberra and Sydney. I made the trip in an historic train carriage; and as the engine pulled into Bundanoon, I saw that the station had changed its name to Brigadoon for the day! I hope you can join me for this nine part series!

@Curly: Thanks, Curly. Yes, Scottish ancestry is quite strong in this area. The biggest stronghold of Scottish heritage would be the town of Glen Innes on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales. |
