The Rocks - part 1

Posted by
Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 28 June 2011 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Welcome to The Rocks. We are in the historic port area of Sydney that dates back to the first European settlement in 1788.

This week I present a series on The Rocks; and in this shot, you see a view down Playfair Street towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

This quarter of old Sydney takes its name from the sandstone cliffs that look out over the Harbour. The Rocks is now as much a haven for locals - as well as tourists; and the latest plans for The Rocks call for improving the already pleasant walking experience by closing more streets to traffic.

On the left, you see a row of former terrace houses with iron lace balconies. Many such streets are now home for some of the city’s best restaurants and galleries.

Sorry, dumb question...What are the boxes on the left? Newspaper vending stands? Odd postboxes?

28 Jun 2011 7:02am

@CElliottUK: Good question, Chris. Not absolutely sure but I think these are display cases for some the shops along the street.

looks like the town has been invaded by aliens and they have all been sucked up into the mother ship :) great shot!!!

This is a great composition, i quite agree. The view here is magnificent allowing our eye to travel up and around. Additionally, I am a "sucker" for brick pavement like this, so you had me at first glance ;-) I find myself wondering what that tal building is way off ion the distance beyond the stack and in the sunlight...Cool shot, Stephen!

Terrific composition. I'm always intrigued when you can get urban photos with no people in them. Like a theatrical set I can imagine the characters that inhabit it.
