Gulaga National Park - part 2

Posted by Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 23 February 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

The trail to the summit of Gulaga - passing one of the giant granite boulders that are a feature of the mountain side.

There are several types of rainforest on the mountain. Here, on the drier slopes, we are working our way along the path between stands of tall eucalypt forest. Around the many little streams, we also pass groves of lush tree ferns.

The trail follows an old mining track. There was a gold rush on the mountain in the late 1800s when miners extracted alluvial gold.

Is there still gold in them hills? I heard on the news today that a very large pink diamond was found in western Australia. One can just dream of such a find.

@kiwisa: Alas, no more gold. A trip out West in search of diamonds might be more worthwhile!

Bold & beautiful. The hiker looks dwarfed by the surroundings. I love how this frame asks "what's around the next bend?"

@Williams: Thanks, Paul, Yes - a sense of 'what's around the next bend' is exactly what I was seeking to create with this framing.

London Caller from United Kingdom

We have lots of monkeys in our tropical rainforest in Malaysia?
So what can you find in yours?
Koalas? Maybe?
Did you get any koala shots?

23 Feb 2012 9:43pm

@London Caller: Birds rule the mountain, LC. Hundreds of species of birds. I saw a swamp wallaby. Although they are shy animals, you might also see snakes or lizards, wombats, possums, platypus and echidnas. And yes – maybe even a koala!

Steven from Chicagoland, United States
