Hip hop hands - part 2

Posted by
Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 4 March 2011 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

In this short series we take a look at Hip hop and dance. Here, you see the Kulture Break dance group as they bust a move.

What strikes me most about Hip hop and Breakdance is the strong part played by hand movement and gestures. The show itself is all about the moves and the sound; but when you see the still, silent images it is the hands that grab your attention. Thus our title for the series - Hip hop hands.

I missed your post yesterday - sorry - so I gladly went back to take a look because this short series is long on awesomeness!!...I agree with my good friend Julie Brown, and... taking step further, may I just say that I think you do a fantastic job on the photo-documentation and narration of music, dance, culture and all that I have seen from your blog! I am sure that you are aware of this: Many people seem to think that Hip Hop, Hip Hop dance, Break Dance, Rap, etc are "Brand New" genres and have no relation to anything. In a large sense they are certainly "new" but at the same time, they are heavily influenced and reminiscent of dance and verbal (oral) performances going back to African and other early cultures. Over time cultures from literally all around the world, have adopted, molded, displayed, from their own point of view, the moves, sounds, beats, and vocalizations that have their roots in the past...Despite argument from "non-fans" modern Hip Hop and Rap are truly a culmination of and certainly influenced by centuries of artistic development....some may not "approve" or these various froms and genres, but, as all art is and should be, these forms, while based and influenced by the past, are speaking quite literally of the present - a reflection of the present. I say Bravo to you, sir and BRAVO to human art!!

Just as disciplined as any other dance genre. Great shot - beautifully presented.

Phil David Morris from Saskatoon, Canada

I really like this series Stephen, anything to do with hip hop and dance is always
a wonderfully "moving" subject. The hand and face gestures combine superbly
in this timed capture. Nicely decayed background adds the sparkle to the light
patterns on the dancers. Interpretive dance at its best.
