Rusty steam tractor

Posted by
Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 3 May 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I am exploring the area around the historic town of Braidwood – an hour’s drive out of Canberra.

The region was famous for its gold in the 1850s. After the end of the gold rush, many once thriving settlements became little more than place names on the map.

This rusty steam powered tractor stands at the entrance to the Old Cheese Factory at Reidsdale. The farm now produces cider from locally grown apples.

I called in to get a flavor of the region (and try the cider!) before I venture into a photo shoot at the old flour mill on nearby Millpond Farm. I begin this Mill series tomorrow. Hope you can join me!

Seems like a work by a nature steampunk artist, not done by an artist but by nature.
Really natural look and a real treasure this view. Something I would be quite exited
by if I came across it. Beautiful angle.

As a cider buff myself, I'd be staright in there! A wonderful subject matter that could tell us a thousand stories. The natural degradation is exquisite. Very nicely captured.

Cider is a treat, and so is this shot. Wonderful comprehensive coatings of corrosion! You framed it just right, too.

So many of these old ghost towns here seem to have similar stories. The mid to late 1800s brought lots of people seeking gold. The gold ran out and the towns dried up literally. A fine shot of this old steam engine.
