Into the blue - part 9

Posted by
Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 21 July 2011 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

A water feature in John Knight Park. This pond is part of a cascading stream that runs into Canberra's Lake Ginninderra.

I shot this scene late on a cold winter’s day. To get the long exposure, I used a neutral density filter – ND 10 grade. I then processed the image in Color Efex Pro.

I have been chasing hues of blue from dawn to dusk; and over the next two days I will finish the series in the twilight zone!

Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, France

Nice place, like the angle of view. But the contrasts are strong and the light is difficult to catch and the top of the shot is a little bit over-exposed don't you think ? I think it's possible to correct with Ps or other software... :-)

21 Jul 2011 7:10am

@Evelyne Dubos: Thanks, Evelyne. Yes, good point, I could also have cropped a little more of the brightness from the top of the image.

Z from Shanghai, China

Amazing long exposure and again the beautiful blue!

21 Jul 2011 8:21am

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

a picture of two halves. Nice treatment and vibrant foreground colour that, to my mind, is enhanced by cropping off about half of the top background. Any thoughts on this?

21 Jul 2011 9:16am

@grouser: Thanks - yes good point - a little more cropping would be the way to go.

janina from Melbourne, Australia

Yes, I really like this...for a number of reasons. Composition -- having seen the potential, the lighting effect and the rich blue, even the girl waving at you, there in the background! stars. ^_^

21 Jul 2011 9:53am

@janina: Thanks, Janina. One of the kids was hopping from stone to stone – but hardly even a blur in the shots I took with the long exposure!

Don Levesque from Saint John, Canada

There is a surreal touch here, both the colors and angle enhance it ! Original.

21 Jul 2011 11:44am

@k@: Thanks, Karine. Yes, with the high level of processing to the shot I was seeking this surreal look to make it worthwhile.

Must have been really strong light that day, there's nothing to suggest that it was a 25 second exposure.

21 Jul 2011 1:44pm

Suzanne from Naperville, United States

I love this Stephen....the clarity in the foreground with the reflections of the clouds and then the way it fades into the fog in the distance. Well done!!

It must have been a really calm day. The trees are rock solid, and I can't see the "Misty waves" that you get with a long exposure of water. Cool shot, however you look at it!

Irene from San Francisco, United States

I love the blue water in the foreground with the clouds reflection and the fog effect in the background. Well done.

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

This is really superb, Stephen! The exposure time is amazing and I really love the mixed effect with the clarity in the pool and the hazy feel in the upper half - The round stones in the pool seem to be like giant pieces of cork floating there..and the slight curvature at the bottom half of the frame lends even more wonder and amazement to this magnificent scene. This is truly a masterful job here...I love this one Stephen!!

The twenty five second exposure and ND filter combine beautifully here along with the ultra wide 16mm focal length to gives us a magnificent angle and frame with a wonderful ambiance and capture of detail. Nice technical skills with this shot, Stephen. Texural bliss.

That gorgeous cobalt blue looks like it can make these stones float like angels on this
water !! Superbly beautiful photo, as the background in relation looks most ominous,
and dangerous, where the only safe place is to be found perched on these cold stone
islands. Magnifique !!~
