Cowra gothic

Posted by
Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 16 March 2012 in Architecture and Portfolio.

My trip to Cowra in the Central West of New South Wales would not be complete without a look at the architecture of the town.

Here, you see a shot of St Raphael's Church. The triple arched doorway is a distinctive feature of its gothic style.

The time of day and bright sunlight was a problem in getting this shot. I went to the trouble of setting a custom white balance but in colour the shadows looked too harsh. The contrast looks better in b&w. I used Silver Efex Pro for the b&w treatment.

Looks typically late 1800s architecture, and the Silver Efex has done a great job with the contrast, especially that nice deep sky.

Is this a gothic style; reminds me a little of some Spanish influence, quite friendly and inviting; to me most gothic churches are intimidating, especially cathedrals. That wooden door tells me it is a place for the common man and is a welcoming aspect, including the statue of Raphael, no doubt. Good detail; don't like the lean, perhaps practising a little straightening in image editing may help that, stephen. Otherwise, good work. ;oD
