Agats Town - part 4

Posted by
Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 23 May 2012 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

We are now on the boardwalk in Agats. The whole town is connected by these walk ways over the tidal mangrove swamp.

These two women seem to be heading to - or from - the market. In my next post - I’ll see what is fresh at the market.

23 May 2012 12:42pm

franz from Baden, Austria

this is a rather ingeniously laid-out place, it seems! walking around the village with dry feet all the time ... not bad! the first woman looks more indonesian than papua ... is there stron in-migration from the other parts of indonesia? i thought the people in your previous images were 100% papua ...

23 May 2012 1:09pm

@franz: Ah, Franz, you raise a very big question! These women do look more Javanese. Indonesia has a Transmigration policy. It pays people to resettle in remote areas such as the Asmat. The Asmat is a region of Papua; and the Independence movement has been strong there in past decades. One result of Transmigration would be to dilute the struggle for Independence. On the other hand, Indonesia would argue that their policy brings wealth, education and new opportunities. And at least there is one language for all – Bahasa Indonesia. Compared to Syuru (where I started this series), Agats is a larger, more modern – and wealthier town. Agats also has more people of Javanese descent. You might see this from the shots that are to follow.

Shaahin Bahremand from Tehran, Iran

so beauty shot

23 May 2012 6:25pm

London Caller from United Kingdom

They just chuck away rubbish to the river?!
That's so not good for the environment, especially if they have to reply on the river for the livelihood.

23 May 2012 6:48pm

@London Caller: Yes, it looks as if they throw all the rubbish off the boardwalk! I didn't notice any bins. As you can see, plastics and cans are now very common. I saw a lot of small children with plastic drinking cups. As you say - not so good for the environment. I guess in the old days, there was no packaging of food or products.
