View from the Stone Country

Posted by
Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 13 July 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

View from the rocky escarpment - known as the Stone Country. Below is the flood plain of the Kakadu National Park.

On the rock face you can see one of Kakadu's ancient rock paintings. Most of these Aboriginal rock galleries and sacred sites remain a secret to the local tribes.

Perfect treatment for this subject...it resembles a charcoal sketch. It must have been amazing to see this ancient marker.

Very beautiful view, I cannot help but think it is simply a giant whose hand is extended
forward as he lays asleep !~

13 Jul 2012 12:34pm

@Phil Morris: Thanks, Phil. Neat concept. The giant’s hand would go well with an Aboriginal dreamtime story.

Wonderful processing that works so well with this Stone Country presentation Stephen.... it gives the feeling of a time long ago. The composition is lovely with the bit of brush, water and far off mtns and of course that huge rock with the painting, so balanced...... you have captured a moment perfectly!

Uluru of the North? ;)
Do you need to hire a special guide to take to you to this scared place?

13 Jul 2012 10:11pm

@London Caller: I was on a two day tour of Kakadu. Apart from the return bus trip from Darwin, the tour was actually several side trips - a scenic flight; river cruises; and this tour with guide to see the rock art galleries.
