I spent some time on the street with Harlie - a vendor for The Big Issue. As Harlie told me, each day is different. He might sell four or five copies in only a few minutes. Then an hour could pass without a single sale.
The reward - apart from selling all your copies - is to meet regulars who look forward to picking up the fortnightly edition from you. In this shot, you see such a moment. The woman buying from Harlie said she was in London recently and always looked forward to The Big Issue when it hit the streets there. She was pleased to find the Australian edition on sale in Canberra.
Many strangers pass - but with determination you can meet some friendly faces who will look out for you and become regular readers and customers.
The Big Issue is a great read. Similar editions of this social enterprise paper could be on sale on a street corner near you.
