I return to my cruise ship adventures onboard the Orion. After departing West Papua and the Asmat, we crossed the Arafura Sea to the Tanimbar Islands. Still part of Indonesia, this island group is on the edge of the Banda Sea. The expedition plan was to land on Yamdena Island - famous for its ancient stone stairway leading up from the beach.
However, in remote places such as this, sea and tide can be hard to predict. Unfortunately, on the day we arrived, the outer reef was too dangerous for a Zodiac crossing. We were unable to visit the village of Sangliat Dol. Disappointing for the villagers as well - since they had prepared an elaborate welcome.
On the other side of the island in calmer water, the captain spotted a fishing village. We decided to land. Even among friends, surprise visits are not always welcome! Walking up from the beach, we were unsure what type of reception awaited us. To see what happened next, please join me on my tour of the village.
