Union Lane - part 2

Posted by
Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 10 January 2013 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Street artists chill out in Union Lane. This is one of the best alleys in the CBD for graffiti and street art. The alley is so narrow it is easy to miss - despite being only a few paces from Bourke Street Mall in the centre of Melbourne.

Next up - we move on to Hosier Lane - Melbourne's best known graffiti spot.

Attractive shot Stephen. I hope that you do not suffer too much from the wave of heat and a fire in your country?

10 Jan 2013 8:31am

@Focales: Thanks, Focales. The fire threat has eased for now but still many hot days between now and the end of February.

Jason Politte from Conway, AR, United States

Really cool shot - they're just chilled out before going to work. Guess they don't have to worry too much about getting caught, eh? Any idea what the girl's looking at on the camera?

10 Jan 2013 8:43am

@Jason Politte: Thanks, Jason. She might have got a shot of me photographing them! However, I think the woman had been recording some of their street art. They told me their work was "semi-official". Work by these graffiti artists is encouraged to a great extent. But no doubt they like to push the boundaries of where and how they are permitted to work.

C'est le repos des guerrières! Elles ont fait du bon boulot! La rue ressemble désormais à une galerie à ciel ouvert !
Bonne journée lumineuse!

As I said yesterday, I think it's great that there's a "Nominated place" where they can do their thing without being harassed by the cops, and, of course, they don't feel compelled to spray elsewhere

A true small business - :) It's great that those who do that legally on designated areas, no problems, and it is often well done. I like a lot.
Have a good day.

Another great angle accentuates the environment...an interesting subculture of artists with their own set of codes.

Love the colorful art in the background. Interesting to see three people who are paying no attention to each other.

Fantastic image. I like how they are just sitting there taking a break sort of in their own worlds. I love the expressions on their faces especially against the colorful background.

J'ai peur pour la blondinette qui regarde dans son appareil photo, j'ai comme l'impression qu'elle va se retrouver le cul par terre...et cela ne sera pas la faute à Voltaire, ni à Rousseau.

Great group shot, did she shoot you too as you worked?

11 Jan 2013 9:40am

@Curly: Thanks, Curly. If she did get the shot, it was too quick for me to notice. I know I can't work that fast!
