Flowers on the steps of Old Parliament House in tribute to former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.
As one of the tribute cards reads: "Farewell to a great reformer. Farewell to a truly great Australian. Gough Whitlam's legacy lives on!"
Mr Whitlam died Tuesday at age 98. Although he was only Prime Minister for a short time, he gave the nation a new destiny. He introduced long overdue social reforms and gave the country a new vitality and focus.
Recent governments have overturned some of his reforms (such as free university education). However, his legacy is eternal in culture and the arts.
