Surf Marathon - part 1

Posted by Stephen (Canberra, Australia) on 11 January 2016 in Sport & Recreation and Portfolio.

The Pambula team competing in the George Bass Surf Marathon. On this day, dangerous surf conditions forced the boats inland to race on a 22 km course on the Wagonga Inlet at Narooma. The seven day event from Batemans Bay to Eden is the longest and toughest surfboat marathon in the world.

Due to heavy rain and storms on the coast I was lucky to get these shots on the Wagonga Inlet. The bridge I was shooting from also provided an excellent high angle. Looking back at my previous (20 part) surfboat series you can get some idea of surf conditions when the boats are launching from ocean beaches.

Launching off the beach looks to be difficult in the best of weather. Doing it in stormy conditions would suicidal. You got a neat shot of the action.
