This week I will be posting photos of wild birds that visit my garden. We have a bird feeder which helps the birds survive during winter when there is a shortage of food such as seeds, berries and other fruit, nectar, blossoms and leaf buds. Here, you see a pair of King Parrots. They become rather tame and I can get very close for this type of shot. King Parrots arrive in my garden in pairs or in groups of up to eight birds. There is a seasonal pattern to their visits with fewer numbers seen during the breeding season. At night they roost high in the forest canopy in the mountain ranges outside Canberra - so must fly some distance to visit suburban gardens during the day.
@: Helen :: Thanks Helen. That could be true as they like to fly long distances!
@grouser: Thanks grouser. Yes the King Parrot is endemic to eastern Australia - from far north Queensland to the southern coast of Victoria. They nest in hollow tree trunks and also need a tall forest canopy to roost at night.
